The Rotary Burlington Music Festival is a fun event. It is both a competition and an opportunity for music and speech arts students to perform before appreciative audiences. There is a two-week-long series of competitions in various classes of music and speech arts, held in friendly venues in Burlington. Students pay a registration fee for each class they enter. Classes run Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. We engage the most experienced and talented adjudicators from across Canada to listen to the competitions each day. After their individual performances, students receive written assessments and marks as well as a verbal analysis of their work. The opportunity of exposure to expert critiques and advice from such adjudicators is the main reason many students enter the festival.
In each class students receive a ribbon for participation, and first, second and third place medals are awarded accordingly. On the recommendation of the adjudicators, the festival awards scholarships to the most successful and promising students from among all the eligible competitors.
All scholarships are presented to students at an award ceremony during the Grand Festival Concert. Many talented students are invited to perform at the concert, where two new adjudicators will select recipients of our grand awards: The Irish Family Scholarships for The Most Promising Overall Student and Runner-up, the Robert E. Elstone Memorial Scholarship and The Most Promising Young Performer and Runner-up Scholarships.
Since 2001, the Rotary Burlington Music Festival has been a member of OMFA, the Ontario Music Festivals Association. This entitles us to send students who have been recommended by the adjudicators to compete at the Provincial Music Festival. Winners in the most senior categories may then be eligible to compete at the National Music Festival.
